MARQUETRY: MAKING PATTERNS IN WOOD

Course Description

Create a beautiful panel that could hang on your wall or become an inset for a table top or a box lid. Participants will use a chisel to hand cut very thin veneers into geometric shapes following patterns selected from the monuments of Pakistan.

You will learn how to identify and choose different types of wood and how to work effectively and creatively with the all-natural colour palette and patterns of grain offered by the various woods. The individual shapes will then be fitted together, glued down and finished to create your own unique and organically beautiful pattern in real wood.

ILLUMINATION: FLORAL MOTIFS

Course Description

This is a taster session introducing the technique of illuminating floral motifs. In this taster session, students will focus on a single khatai motif, refining different brush techniques for outlining and shading

ILLUMINATION: OTTOMAN DESIGNS

Course Description

This is an introductory course on the art of Ottoman Illumination. Students will be introduced to the motifs and vocabulary of this art form, how these motifs are used to create compositions and some floral painting techniques. Through this course they will be able to understand the basic principles and process of the art of illumination, practically experience this art form and understand its historical significance.

BUILDING THREE DIMENSIONS

Course Description

Explore pattern, structure and proportion in three dimensions – an excellent opportunity for budding architects and designers!

The Platonic Solids are a unique group of 3-D forms that have fascinated mathematicians, scientists and artists world-wide since ancient times. They not only relate to forms in the natural world, they also inspire traditional architecture and design.

They are fun and beautiful. Learn just some of many different ways to build these shapes by constructing your own models and collaborating with others on large structures. Discover how each method reveals something new and different and how each holds specific potential for creative application.

POINT, LINE, PLANE, PATTERN

Course Description

Combine colour and geometry to create exciting sculptural forms.

Learn how patterns work by drawing, painting, and building geometry, first on paper and then with 3D solid shapes. Experiment with several ways of developing designs, explore these new patterns using paint to create beautiful variations, then transform them into fascinating 3D shapes.
